The Wave: We’re In!
We just got our notice that we won the lottery for admission into Coyote Buttes most restricted area: The Wave.
Yay!
Now the planning can begin.
First off, I needed to actually find The Wave… of course, Wikipedia has coordinates that I was able to plug into MapSource (c’mon Garmin finish the Mac version already!). Wow, it sure is in the middle of nowhere!

So, anyhow I know that some hiking will be involved so we’ll need to put together our daypacks (no camping at The Wave). We’ll also need full camping gear and all of the possible photo gear that I can conceive of. If you’ve ever tried to fly with camping gear or a full compliment of photo gear than you’ll understand why we’re going to have to drive out there from Pennsylvania.
Long drive.
We’ll need to stock up on Audible books.
First things first, I need to confirm our reservation with the good folks at the BLM and ask them if we’ll need a 4 wheel drive vehicle or if a car will do. Cars are much cheaper to rent, but a 4WD will have higher clearance and… well… four wheel drive.
Next we’ll look at routes & gear lists.

The campground on the road west of Coyote Buttes on the Arizona border doesn’t require 4FD. If you don’t want to fly with camping gear, you can stay in Kanab (or some town west of The Wave, if I’ve gotten the name wrong) or Page. But there’s lots of other great sites in the area, so you probably want the car and camping gear to visit them. You shouldn’t need 4WD for other campgrounds either if you drive with your eyes open. Do check of course, but you’re almost certainly wasting your money, and most 4WD are less safe.
Not a bad idea to start in by 6 a.m. or earlier. We went in at 8 and missed some good light. Also go a bit further to the so-called second wave.
It’s worth it.
