If you don't want to fly with camping gear, you can stay in Kanab (or some town west of The Wave, if I've gotten the name wrong) or Page. But there's lots of other great sites in the area, so you probably want the car and camping gear to visit them. You shouldn't need 4WD for other campgrounds either if you drive with your eyes open. Do check of course, but you're almost certainly wasting your money, and most 4WD are less safe. Not a bad idea to start in by 6 a.m. or earlier. We went in at 8 and missed some good light.
