When you relocate your masters, you can place them pretty much anywhere (even to on file servers, I believe).

If you put them onto an external disk there are a few things you need to know:
- If the disk is mounted you can perform edits
- If the disk is mounted you can edit metadata
- If the disk is unmounted you CANNOT perform edits
- If the disk is unmounted you can edit metadata
- If you have previews generated for the image, you can use those previews in Mail, etc whether the disk is mounted or not

I'm a little confused by what mean by "offlining masters." If you were to reconnect the external drive, would you be able to edit the master image? Without the drive can you work on a photo, and come back later to reconnect and change the master?

I'm also living on a MacBook Pro and I'm down to the last 15% of my drive. It isn't a happy camper.

thanks. I'm doing my best to read as much as I can to set up my library/folders/workflow right. I've just started using aperture (and immediately had lightroom 3 envy). there is nothing worse than manually scrolling thru images looking for that shot you know you have but can't find. But who has the TIME? You post has been helpful. thanks.
