Aperture

An in-depth understanding of the Aperture data store is necessary for anyone who wants to do serious backups. Here is my analysis of how Aperture stores its data…
How Aperture stores its data: Aperture stores information about master images and all versions in tons of text files. Each master gets its own text file and [...]

Well, I am pretty sure that my Aperture Library is put back together. I am sure that I lost some metadata and edits. Not much but I am sure that something didn’t make the transition. That is one of the biggest problems with UI scripting - the lack of good usable feedback. My recover plan [...]

Aperture can export *some* of the metadata associated with your images quickly & easily. It can’t, however, reimport that data nor can it export all of the metadata from your images.
Hence these AppleScripts.
The first one will export the metadata for all selected file. It will save the data to a text file with [...]

As my MacBook Pro does its best impression of a computer possessed I continue to revise my rebuild plan. As I had mentioned before, I think that I know what the problem is but that fixing the problem may be difficult enough that it isn’t worthwhile.
Here is my current rebuild plan:

Well, something terrible has happened to my Aperture Library. In theory, Aperture should be able to recover from corruption, but it appears that the source of my problems are the files that Aperture uses to rebuild the database. That means that every rebuild just puts bad stuff back into the database.
Bad mojo.

You all know that I’m an Aperture user. I love Aperture. It is almost exactly what I want in a photography tool. With the addition of editing plugins with version 2 it has become even cooler. I’ve purchased a couple of plugins [...]

Thanks to diligent photographer Will Taylor for discovering a key piece to successfully geotagging images in Aperture post-import: it only ’sticks’ for exported images if your masters are stored outside of the Aperture Library ie they are Referenced Masters.

Thanks Will!

Updated August 18, 2008 (thanks Will!)
Geocoding with Aperture before version 2 was almost a non-starter. With the addition of the ‘Update EXIF’ command it is almost too easy. Here are my tips for good geocoding on Mac OS X with Aperture and HoudahGeo.
First off, you’ll need a GPS. I recently started using a Garmin [...]

Uhm… no, they are not. Apparently yesterday I was short of attention. In the future I promise to more carefully make sure I am looking at the right Finder window.
Sorry for any confusion and thanks to those who pointed out that I should not drink so much so early in the day.

Slimming your Library
Recently I saw a posting to the Apple-hosted Aperture discussion forums about Aperture Library cruft. Apparently the poster discovered that if you delete referenced images from your Library the Library doesn’t actually get smaller. He had (naturally) assumed that the thumbnail images would be deleted and that the Library would be smaller. Why [...]
