I guess I don’t get to play with the lens focus microadjustments in my camera. Don’t get me wrong, I’m glad the autofocus is on, but it might have been fun to fine tune things.

Now that spring is finally here I am starting to really miss my photowalks with Hera. 1 dog + 1 camera makes for a nice walk. Even when I have to shoo her away from close to the ground closeups I have a great time.

Today, walking the Gang of Twelve Legs I saw a very nice dewey spider web. I saw some clover with a great sheen of wetness in perfect light. You will have to take my word for this because I didn’t have a camera with me. The problem is that 3 dogs (even with 1 off leash) and a single camera is a real pain. If I try to crouch down I have 3 wet noses wondering what excellent (and hopefully rank) smell I found.

I need to work out a better system because I don’t want to give up my photowalks and I can’t neglect the dog walking.

Maybe I need a dog walker…

I recently bought the bullet (so to speak) and added some f/2.8 glass to my camera bag. Actually, the 70-200 f/2.8L IS is too big for my bag, but that’s not important here. What is important is that being able to shoot at a constant f/2.8 is weird. I’m used to having my max aperture get smaller as I zoom which means that it is tougher to keep that shutter speed fast enough to get the shot.

With the 70-200 f/2.8L IS (what a fun name to type) I’m really enjoying working the indoor shot without a flash and being at 200mm and f/2.8 is really cool since before I would have been at f/5.6 or so. That is a lot of difference in best shutter speed. Take into account the 40D’s higher ISO capability (no, it isn’t a 5DII…) and I’m looking forward to seeing what these shots look like in Aperture.

I’ll post some shots soonish…

BTW- the 100-400 f/4.5-5.6L IS is a truly amazing lens. Sharp is almost an understatement…

I’m not sure what the numbers mean, but I’ve been digging and have determined that at least for Canon cameras, the EXIF Flash tag will be either a 1 a 73 or a 25 (and possibly other numbers). The number seems to correspond to the age of the camera. My DSLRs and G10 all seem to use 73, Gina’s SD700IS uses 25 and my old PowerShot S50 uses 1.

I should try shooting with an external flash to see if the number is different.

Anyhow, using my Garmin eTrex HCx to navigate our way to and back from The Wave, I was able to use the excellent HoudahGeo to geocode my images. I then used some of those images to build a photographic journal of our hike.

To take the virtual hike yourself, download this KMZ file and open it in Google Earth.

I love technology.
